Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get involved?

Firstly, we are very excited to have you on the team! There are several ways to get involved with us.

Communication - In order to stay up to date on communications regarding the team, you must join our email list and our Group Me. The Group Me for school year is usually created a week or two before the school year begins, and we use it throughout the season for regular communication. We also have a weekly email Newsletter throughout the entirety of the year. It always includes updates on the team, upcoming events, and summaries of the previous week. During the summer we also release optional summer swim practices and swimmer spotlights so that you can get to know your officers and peers before the academic year begins. To receive the Newsletters you MUST fill out the Interest Form on our Home page (or on the Contact Us page).

At the beginning of the semester - We advertise the team and collect member information during the Night at the Rec Event, which usually takes place the week before classes start. This is a great time to come meet us and see what our team is about. Following Night at the Rec, we have an information meeting in one of the Rec Classrooms where we talk in-depth about all of our plans for the upcoming school year, including dues, policies, schedules, and more! This is by far our most important meeting for you to attend if you want to get involved.

How much does it cost to join the team?

Dues tend to vary for each academic year, but the ones for the upcoming or current season can be found on our Information page. Membership dues go towards our swim & dive coaches' salary, apparel, competition entry fees, home meet costs, and travel & lodging fees.

2025-26 Year - For the upcoming academic year, the officer board has decided to change our usual methods for pricing of membership dues. Instead of charging everyone the usual yearly or semesterly dues, everyone will instead be asked to pay a slightly lower cost for yearly and semesterly dues, while those who choose to attend Regionals or Nationals will be asked to pay a small, separate fee in order to cover costs. Our hope in doing this is to make the pricing more fair for those that aren't planning to attend these meets and to hopefully still lower the overall cost for those that are.

Do I have to try out?

Our team does not have tryouts. We offer a 2-week trial period for new swimmers and divers at the beginning of each semester before we require payment of membership dues in order to participate in practices. This is the time for you to come and try out our practices and meet your teammates in a real swimming atmosphere. However, no tryouts are required as we encourage those of all skill levels to join our team! Our typical range of experience for members can range from those who have attended national competitions to those that have never swam before. As long as you are a CSU student in good academic standing, you are more than welcome to come join us for our trial period.

Are meets mandatory?

Home Meets - Meets that we host are mandatory. We usually have one of these per semester, but without communication to an officer regarding any scheduling conflicts, all of our members are required to swim, dive, or volunteer at our home meets. If you don't compete (or if you don't get an excusal from an officer), you MUST volunteer! This policy ensures that our events can run smoothly, so we encourage you to bring your friends and family to help volunteer!

Away Meets - Meets that we don't host are not mandatory. We encourage your participation, as these are typically fun endeavors that our members really enjoy, but they are not required.

Where and when are practices? Are they mandatory?

Practice times and locations can vary each semester. Check the Information or Schedule page to see when and where practices are for the upcoming or current school year. Practices are not mandatory, however, you must attend at least two practices in the week before a competition that you plan to attend.

When and where are our Championship meets, and how do I qualify?

Fall Championship Meet - At the end of the fall semester, we have a Fall Championship Meet. Depending on the year, this could either be Western Regionals or a different Fall Championship Meet. We choose which meet to attend according to cost, interest level in attending, and proximity to potential competitions. Our chosen Fall Championship Meet never has qualification times and is open to the whole team. However, there may be a cap on the number of swimmers that we are able to take depending on which meet we choose, and methods for deciding who gets to go is chosen by the current officer board.

Nationals - The Nationals competition typically takes place in late March or early April. To qualify, you must make the cuts for the individual events. Cuts are typically posted in September of each year, and can be found on the CCS website and our Meets page. Relays are made up of those that are attending in individual events.
